Flatwoods
Steele, AL 35987
A stretch of the Flatwoods forest in Steele is said to have been used as a settlement for freed slaves after the Civil War. Before long the KKK attacked and burned down the small village, killing many of the residents and chasing off the others. Those who died there are said to still haunt the land, appearing as strange lights after dusk. Some visitors have also reported smelling burning flesh.
