Moundville Archaeological Site
Moundville, AL 35474
The Moundville Archaeological Site was the political and ceremonial center of a Mississippian culture that occupied the area from about the 11th through the 16th century. Today it is maintained by the University of Alabama Museums. The site fell into decline around 1450 AD, but 29 platform mounds remain to this day. Some visitors have reported seeing lights coming from one of the larger mounds at night, and others have heard phantom drums playing.
