The Tutwiler Hotel
Birmingham, AL 35203
The Tutwiler Hotel is said to be haunted by a mischievous spirit who likes to turn on lights and appliances inside the building. Some have suggested that the ghost belongs to Colonel Tutwiler himself, however the current hotel is not actually the original building that once bore his name, and is in fact located in a different location which had previously been an apartment complex. It is possible that the ghost belongs to a former resident of the old Ridgeley apartments who lived there before they were renovated to become the new Tutwiler in the mid 1980s.

Me and my best friend were staying here for a dance competition at the alabama theatre. We knew about this app so we researched before we came, already aware of the hauntings walking in not beliveing any of them. But as teenagers we do not reccomened going to this hotel. Me and my best friend were going down to get ice for our water late at night, we were both extremeley tired and doozy, when a tall man approached us and asked us which floor we were going to. Which obviously we didnt answer him and instead we walked away to get our ice. Then we turned around and hes still standing behind us breathing really heavy. So then we speed up and we click the elevator button, and as soon as we get into the elevator hes staring in the mirror of the elevator. So as soon as we get into the elevator we start panicking and trying to click the buttons, but nothing is working. As soon as we hit button "6", it lights up, it was the only one that worked. When we got off the elevator, we ran to the stairs and sprinted to ur room and never fell asleep because of our expierence. Never going here again.

My husband and I stayed in one of the bridal suites August 17-18 in 2012 (our wedding weekend). At the time, I was unaware of the haunting rumors, and never had any bad vibes while there. It’s easy to deem something as haunted when that idea is planted in your mind, but that wasn’t the case. While staying in the bridal suite, my dreams were so vivid—so much that I remember them to this day—nothing bad, just extremely vivid and random. I didn’t sleep well, I equated that to being anxious about our big day & an anxious mind could’ve been the reason for the dreams. I recall that we stayed out late bar hopping with our wedding party after our rehearsal dinner, so we didn’t get back to the hotel until the wee hours of the morning on the 18th. We get back, get in the bed, turn out the lights and the first incident occurred. The bathroom light was off—all the lights were—and it like flickered on. My now husband got up to make sure the switch wasn’t stuck in between on and off and got back into bed. He fell asleep before I did. Almost as soon as I realize he’s asleep I hear a knocking at the door (keep in mind this is like 2am). I wake him up and he goes and no one is there. We had a do not disturb hanger on the door. He looked down the hall thinking it could’ve been a family member as most of them were staying at the same hotel. The door knocking happened 3 different times. Once early in the morning on the 18th (or wedding day) and twice early in the morning on the 19th. We ignored it the 3rd time, but we can’t explain the knocking. Knowing now that the hotel is rumored to be haunted, it gives me chills to think about our experiences—I never once thought during our time staying there that these incidents were paranormal. It never crossed my mind. It wasn’t until I saw a video on social media telling about the Tutwiler supposedly being haunted that I started to question my experiences while staying there. Was it paranormal? I don’t know, but I can’t explain the things we encountered.

I woke up at around 2:30 am to my twin babies cooing and baby talking which is weird because they usually sleep through the night. When I sat up there was a man standing over their pack and plays that walked towards the bathroom. I assumed it was my husband but thought it was weird he didn’t say anything. I also didn’t have on my glasses. I went to pick up the louder of the two babies and put her in my bed to get her to fall back asleep. I was waiting for my husband to come back from the bathroom and she fell asleep so I put her back in the pack and play. That’s when I realized that my husband was still in bed. It didn’t feel malicious. It was just a man playing with my babies. I guess he did wake them up in the middle of the night.

The hotel was great, and my daughter told me it was haunted when we showed up there. Every time we got into the elevator, as the doors closed, we heard loud knocking. We thought it might be the elevator, but the knocking pattern was different. It only happened when we were in the elevator alone. If other people got on the elevator, it didn't happen. Nothing happened in our rooms though, other than knocking on the door.

The sweetest little girl would turn on and off my lights and TV like she wanted to play with me. Never saw the man spirit. But I saw the girl.

Its is not haunted.
I stayed there for a week and got absolutley NO evidence of the paranormal.
No knocking, things getting knocked over, or lights getting turned off.
I also brought the following equipment that did NOT show any evidence cuz it ain't haunted. EMF, Spirit Box , Music Box That Detects Movement, Thermal Camera, And a thermometer.

We stayed at the Tutwiler this past weekend. I asked my aunt and sister if either of them tucked me into bed. They both laughed but I as I was settling into bed I was chilly and was adjusting the covers and someone stood over me and tucked me into bed. I saw a figure but I was half sleep I just thought it was my aunt or sister.

My girlfriend and I had a SUPER scary experience at the Tutwiler. After an uneventful first night, we began to notice strange happenings (strange noises, suitcases falling over etc.) and in the middle of the night something came and knocked on the door loudly, I jumped out of bed, hurried over and threw the door open to find nothing there. And then a skeleton popped out.
